Digital ID: Check before you accept
Licensed premises can now accept approved digital identification as proof of age when selling alcohol.
Accepting digital ID is an additional option and premises can continue to accept physical identification. Operators wishing to accept digital ID must first update their age-verification arrangements.
A digital ID must not be accepted simply because it appears on a customer’s phone. Staff cannot rely solely on looking at an app or image, it must be checked through a digital verification service which is certified and listed on the government’s DVS register.
Challenge 25 should continue to be applied consistently and staff must still make the final decision on whether an alcohol sale can proceed.
We have a team of solicitors across a range of legal disciplines all with significant experience in supporting businesses in the leisure sector. Meet our leisure sector team to see how our team can help support you. If you wish to subscribe to our leisure newsletter, please do so here.
