Ten facts about divorce

The Office for National Statistics has recently reported on the marriages that ended in England and Wales in 2012. Some of the statistics may surprise you:

1. There were a total of 118,140 divorces in England and Wales in 2012, a slight increase on the number in 2011.

2. Women applied for divorce in 65 per cent of cases.

3. Almost half of the divorces involved couples who had been married fewer than ten years.

4. One in seven divorces were issued on the grounds of adultery.

5. 9,703 men and 6,026 women aged over 60 got divorced in 2012.

6. The average age of divorcing men was 45, and 42 for women.

7. 71 per cent of divorces related to first marriages.

8. Almost half of the couples going through divorce had a child under the age of 16.

9. 9 per cent of divorces involved a couple who had both been divorced previously.

10. Most divorces involved couples who had been married for between 4 and 8 years.
