Leisure Sector Update: Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)
Welcome to the Harrison Drury Leisure Sector Newsletter. Your regular update on legal developments across the leisure, hospitality and tourism sector. Our aim is to keep you informed, prepared and ahead of the curve with insights tailored to support you and your business.
The Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme aims to incentivise packaging producers to create products that can be recycled or reused, and reduce the burden on consumers and local authorities of management and disposal of packaging waste.
The payment obligations under the scheme, which were due to commence last year, will take effect in October 2025. In the meantime, all businesses with an annual turnover of £1 million or more that import or supply 25 tonnes or more of packaging in the UK must follow the Government guidance and report packaging data by the appropriate deadline.
EPR affects all kinds of businesses, including food and beverage manufacturers and brewers, and the Environment Agency is responsible for regulating the scheme.
