Are pre-nuptial agreements only for celebrities?

Share

Pre-nuptial agreements are often used as a way of ensuring that a person’s properties or savings, which were acquired before a new marriage, are preserved should the marriage go wrong.

We often read about celebrities using pre-nuptial agreements to protect their assets and ensure they are financially secure in the future.

While 50 years ago it was much more common for unhappy couples to stay together, divorce is now a realistic consideration for many married couples.

With many millions of people in the UK now in second marriages, in many cases a person entering into a subsequent marriage may want to ensure that some money or property, which they have saved or inherited, is preserved should the marriage go wrong.

People may choose for these assets to be passed onto their children from a first marriage rather than be claimed by their new spouse in the event of a divorce.

It is advisable that all people, especially those who are marrying later on in life or for the second time, should consider entering into a pre-nuptial agreement with their spouse-to-be.

While it may not be particularly romantic to discuss this so early on in your relationship, if your earnings and financial assets are significantly higher than your partners then it may be wise to seek legal advice and consider a pre-nuptial agreement before you pop the question.
