Family law changes mean civil partnerships can now be converted into marriages

Share

While same sex couples have been able to marry since March 2014, recent changes in family law mean that couples already in a civil partnership are now able to convert their civil partnership to a marriage.

The new rules, which came into force on December 10th, apply to couples who registered their civil partnership in England and Wales.

Eligible couples can chose to convert their civil partnership to marriage convert in a local register office or in an approved premises where marriages of same sex couples can take place.

Following this couples will receive a marriage certificate showing their marriage should be treated as having taken place on the date of their original civil partnership.

The new law means that civil partners now have the option to either remain as civil partners or take part in the brief ceremony needed in order to be married.
